The Mets announced catcher James McCann would be reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of their series opener against the Miami Marlins. Patrick Mazeika has been optioned back to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. McCann last played on May 10 against the Washington Nationals, before suffering a wrist injury that has kept him out for more than a month and a half.

McCann finished his rehab assignment in Double-A with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies earlier this week, where he hit .286 with two doubles and an RBI in five games. While he was rehabbing from the injury, Tomas Nido has done most of the catching for the Major League ballclub. The 28-year-old catcher started 15 of the 20 games in June.
In 21 games this season, McCann is hitting .196 with one home run, six runs batted in, and an OPS at. .551. His bat may not have been where he wanted it to be at the beginning of the season, but his impact as a receiver was certainly there. The Mets had a 2.67 ERA as a team with McCann behind the plate.
Even with McCann getting activated, Nido will get the start behind the plate against the Marlins. Jeff McNeil will also be out of the lineup for the Mets on Friday night, as he will be missing his third straight game with right hamstring tightness. “He’s more available to us tonight than he was…I could use him to pinch hit,” Buck Showalter said.
Lastly, the Mets have said that David Peterson will start on Sunday, not Max Scherzer. The Mets are still trying to figure out what Scherzer’s next step will be and another rehab start is possible. Scherzer threw 65 pitches for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday.
