As has been the norm lately, the margin for error for a Mets starter has been non-existent. Jacob deGrom went out and kept his team in the game for the six innings he pitched, and received no offensive support in a 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night.

DeGrom, 27, pitched six innings while allowing two runs on six hits. He allowed just one walk while striking out nine Pirates on the night. Jacob’s record fell to 3-3 on the season, it was his fourth consecutive quality start as his ERA rose just a bit to 2.82. In his last four starts he is 0-2 with a 2.42 ERA. Over that same time period he has struck out 35 batters while walking six in 26 innings pitched.

The offense has provided no help to its talented starting staff as of late, depleted by injuries and slumps. The pressure has all been on the starting pitching to put up zeros and hope for the best.

“I try not to think about that,” deGrom said. “I think that’s what all our starters do, just try to go out there and put up zeroes no matter what the score is.” (Newsday)

All the pitching staff can do is continue to pitch up to their expectations and eventually the wins will come. The offense has been hit hard with injuries to a point it resembles more of the 2015 offense that took the field prior to the time around the trade deadline. With as good as the Mets pitching staff is, there is no reason to believe that the wins are not far behind.

“These guys in here are good hitters,” deGrom said.. “It’s just a tough stretch. They’ll be back at it pretty soon.”
