Jacob deGrom earned his third win of spring training and continued to impress as the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 6-2 in West Palm Beach. DeGrom threw 4.2 shutout innings while allowing just three hits, two walks, and striking out five. He was once again averaging 99 to 100 mph with his fastball Sunday afternoon, with his slider also touching 95 mph. Here’s a glimpse of him lighting up the gun at 101 mph:

DeGrom’s outing started shaky with a 23-pitch first inning, which included him allowing a hit and a walk before getting out of trouble. He allowed a double in the second inning, no base runners in the third, and followed that by allowing a lead-off single and a walk in the fourth inning. Before handing the ball over to the bullpen, the right-hander notched his fourth and fifth strikeouts in the fifth inning. He finished his outing with 63 pitches under his belt, and the scoreless appearance lowered his Grapefruit League ERA to 0.66.

The Mets’ ace has struck out 21 over the course of 13.2 innings pitched and also has a 0.66 WHIP to go with that sparkling ERA. Needless to say, he appears ready for Opening Day on April 1, which is now just about a week-and-a-half away. DeGrom said he felt good about his latest outing, but admitted that a couple pitches got left over the middle of the plate and were hit hard.

He was opposed by Max Scherzer on Sunday, which is a preview of New York’s regular-season opener in DC. “I enjoy going out there and competing against Max, those are fun games,” said deGrom about pitching against Scherzer. “I try to go out there and leave it all on the field.”

Luis Rojas said deGrom will throw one more time on Friday ahead of opening day on April 1.
