With seven games left, it was all but a formality that the Mets announce Jacob deGrom will be shut down for the remainder of the season.

The 33-year-old right-hander has been out since July with issues in his throwing elbow.

“Jake threw a side yesterday, really good, he checked all the boxes for us,” manager Luis Rojas said. “But we talked today with him too and there’s no point for him to pitch in a game so he’s gonna shut it down for the season”

If the Mets were in a position to compete, deGrom likely would’ve appeared for the Mets against the Atlanta Braves this weekend. Instead, the next time he’ll be seen throwing is February 2022.

“I think he’s going to go through his offseason normally,” Rojas said. “I think coming back in Spring Training he’ll be the Jake that we all know.”

Before his injury, deGrom posted historic numbers. He was 7-2 with a 1.08 ERA in 92 innings pitched. He struck out 146 batters and had a WHIP of 0.55. Opponents batted .129 against him.

This announcement comes the same day the Mets will have Noah Syndergaard make his first major league appearance in two years, since Tommy John surgery in 2019. Syndergaard will start Game 2 of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

A disappointing season for the two-time Cy Young award winner.
