Jacob deGrom was announced as the only Met to make the All-Star team Sunday. It’s his fourth All-Star selection.

It’s a bit of an upset as Taijuan Walker and Marcus Stroman were candidates to make the team as they pitched to a sub-3.00 ERA over the first half of the year. Edwin Diaz, who’s been one of the best closers in baseball, didn’t make the team, either. They’re three parts of the best pitching staff in baseball so far.

Clearly the best pitcher in baseball, deGrom has pitched to a 0.95 ERA over 85 innings in 14 starts. He also has a 45.3 strikeout percentage, which is nine points higher than any other starter in the majors. Zack Wheeler leads the league with 139 strikeouts. DeGrom has 136 in 30 less innings.

He’s breaking records with each star that passes by. He’ll have two more before the All-Star break as deGrom is scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Brewers then next Sunday–two days before the All-Star Game–against the Pirates.

He already said Sunday he won’t pitch in the game, but he would’ve definitely been the starter should things have lined up. According to NY Daily News’ Deesha Thosar, he’s still debating even attending the game in Denver at Coors Field. If he doesn’t, that could clear up a roster spot for Walker or Stroman.

DeGrom said that “any time you make the All-Star team, it’s a huge honor,” but he also needs to look after his health when considering whether to pitch in the game or even attend. The Mets are short on starters, and he wants to make sure he doesn’t compromise the team’s rotation by pitching in the game.

Nevertheless, the National League pitchers are stacked. While it’s disappointing Walker and Stroman didn’t make it to the team, it’s hard to make a clear cut argument for them over the pitchers who did make it. (A reminder that German Marquez, who’s pitched nearly perfectly in June, is the Rockies’ lone representative.)

Luis Rojas backed up a couple of his snubbed pitchers in a press conference after Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader. He argued that both Walker and Diaz should’ve made the team.

You can also view the American League All-Star roster, too. It features Gerrit Cole and Aroldis Chapman, who both flubbed against the Mets Sunday. It also features Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher, and he was also named as the starting designated hitter.
