New York Mets righty, Jacob deGrom battled through seven innings of baseball last night while his mechanics were not a bit out of whack. He allowed just two runs on eight while striking out four, picking up a no-decision in the Mets 3-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Jacob was hit hard through the first few innings of the game. Aside from the first inning, he was able to escape trouble without any further damage. DeGrom allowed two runners to cross the plate in the first and that would be all. Manager, Terry Collins, was pleased with what he saw from his right-handed pitcher.

“This night showed what Jake deGrom is made of,” Collins said. “We all talk about the ‘plus’ stuff. He’s fighting through some mechanical things right now, and this guy was in trouble for the first five innings. And yet you looked up and he gave you seven innings. That tells me a lot about him. … This guy is usually pinpoint, and he hasn’t been that. That’s why he’s been struggling. I’ll tell you one thing: I like running him out there every fifth day.” (ESPN)

In a game that seemed reminiscent to game five of the National League Division Series, deGrom buckled down after allowing two runs in the first. He continued to show what a great pitcher he is, when even his best stuff isn’t working, he is able to find ways to navigate through the game.

“You kind of realize that you don’t have your best stuff,” deGrom said. “My stuff was kind of flat in the zone. I tried to make an adjustment in the game to try to get my front side up. It’s still a little low.”

A work in progress for deGrom who has had quite the whirlwind season thus far. Overall on the season, he is 3-1 with a 2.12 ERA and a WHIP of 1.21.
