Pun aside, David Wright has shown to be the leader everyone has expected him to be. Ever since his first at-bat in 2004 for the Mets, Met fans know that this guy has what it takes to be the leader for this team. The 25-year old All-Star will most likely be named Captain of the Mets, but the question is, "When?" There is no doubt in my mind that Wright will be named Captain. If is isn’t named Captain by the end of next year, I fully expect David to be named in 2010 with the addition of other players and hopefully an impactful Fernando Martinez.
In my opinion, David has what it takes to be Captain. We all know he’s friendly and open with the press, probably more open than any of the players in the clubhouse. He has the skill on the field, no doubt, and he’s even a star off the field with his foundation. With Wright improving every year, I really think he’ll be named Captain within the next 2 years. If David does become Captain, he would be the first Captain since John Franco was Captain in 2004. Wright would be the first position Captain since Mookie Wilson, Keith Hernandez, and Gary Carter in 1989.
With a blossoming star in third base, I hope that Wright would lead the Mets to their first World Series since 1986. If Wright steps up to the challenge, he can easily make players around him better and make the team succeed in the future. Wright’s maturity skyrocketed over the past 3 years and his passion for the game has been burning bright ever since. David is already a leader in my mind and has already taken steps to expose it even more. Even through a skid, the steady-Wright shows that a little bit of spark and fight can make it through, and that’s what a leader needs to show.
