Ike Davis got the Mets off to a quick start with this two run shot in the first inning off Cole Hamels to put the Mets up 2-0 over the Phillies this afternoon at CBP. But that would be all the scoring in the game for the Mets as they fell to Phillies 8-2
Mike Pelfrey started and tossed six innings while working himself in and out of trouble. Luckily, he allowed just one run after allowing eight hits, two walks, and a wild pitch while striking out two. He was able to avoid a lot of damage thanks to some timely groundballs he was able to induce.
The bullpen, which had been a strength for the Mets during their hot start, looked tired and pitched ineffectively. Ramon Ramirez relieved Pelfrey and allowed the Phillies to take the lead, letting up two runs on three hits.The Mets porous defense had a lot to do with the scoring – get used to hearing that a lot this season.
Miguel Batista, Manny Acosta and more bad defense allowed the game to get out of hand in the eighth inning when the Phillies tacked on five more runs (one earned) to make the score 8-2 and thus avoiding the sweep.
David Wright, Lucas Duda and Ike Davis had two hits each, but the the team combined for a dozen strikeouts and Cole Hamels was in control after his shaky first inning.
The Mets are now off to Atlanta to face the red-hot Braves on Monday – winners of five straight. RHP Dillon Gee (0-1, 5.06) goes up against RHP Tommy Hanson (1-1, 2.70), in a 7:10 PM start.
Hey, we won the series. The more series we win, the better it is for us. But I think it’s time for one or two of our pitchers to get to the seventh and eighth innings in the Braves series. Our bullpen needs some oxygen.
