During the radio broadcast of yesterday’s Mets versus Cardinals match-up, long time Mets broadcaster Howie Rose recanted a story from just some years ago.

Rose went on to speak about an experience he got to share at at Tom and Nancy Seaver’s Vineyard in Calistoga, California. The Wilpons wanted to present Seaver with a 2015 National League Championship ring, as well as speak to him about some plans to create something to honor him at Citi Field. Despite not being able to mention exactly what this would be, Rose did make sure to separate it from the idea of a statue, and would say “on top of having a statue at Citi Field.”

This trip happened during the Mets road a seven-game road trip to the west coast during a four game stand at AT&T park that spanned August 18th to August the 21st of the 2016 season. Calistoga only being about an hour and a half drive from San Francisco, it was the most opportune time to make the trip.

Rose continued to say that he was not at liberty to speak of said plans, but noted that the logistics of it would certainly take some time.

It seemed that the purpose of Rose telling this story was to clear the air on what many people on social media were saying regarding Mets ownership only recently honoring Seaver in an unfortunate time when he will no longer be able to remember such fitting tribute, and has retired from public appearances. The point was stressed that this has been in the works for now three years minimum, to his knowledge.

Many Mets fans would agree that the 2009 opening of Citi Field should have featured some tribute to who was, at the time, the only Hall of Famer donning a Mets cap. Despite this not being the case, it’s at least encouraging to see Mets history is not forgotten by team ownership. Mets fans everywhere can hope to see this corrected somewhere in the near future.

The Mets will be honoring the 50th anniversary of 1969 World Series Champion Mets this year from June 28 to June 30.
