The first day of the Winter Meetings went pretty slow, but some pieces began to fall into place for potential splashes and waves in the coming days.

Royals Sign Billy Hamilton

According to Jon Heyman, the Royals and Billy Hamilton struck a deal on the first day of the Winter Meetings, a one year deal worth just over 5 million dollars.

Hamilton, 28, has spent all of his career with the Reds to this point and has been revered as one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball since debuting. Hamilton has stolen 277 bases in over six seasons, but a career OPS of .631 and has proven, again, that you can’t steal first base.

A’s Looking at Infield Options

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the A’s are gearing up to move on from All-Star Jed Lowrie as they pursue other options on the open market. The Chronicle says that ” The A’s pursuit of Jed Lowrie continues. But if the second baseman commands too much in free agency, the team is working on a backup plan.”

The same article names other potential back-up plans, including former Met Daniel Murphy, former All-Star Brian Dozier, and former batting champion DJ LeMahieu.

Lowrie, 34, was an All-Star last season in his fifth season in Oakland after signing a three year deal after one year in Houston in 2015.

Nats Looking For Second Base Help

Also according to Jon Heyman, the Nationals are monitoring the second base market as they look to upgrade over last years combination of a hurt and eventually traded Daniel Murphy and Wilmer Difo.

Among the names mentioned by Heyman were former All-Stars in D.J. LeMahieu, Josh Harrison, and super utility phenom Marwin Gonzalez.

The Nationals have been one of baseball’s most active teams this winter, adding Yan Gomes, Patrick Corbin, Kurt Suzuki, and Trevor Rosenthal to a top-heavy roster as they attempt to even out the roster.

Brewers Interested in Familiar Faces

Robert Murray of The Athletic, reports that the Brewers have showed interest in re-signing third baseman Mike Moustakas as well as second baseman Daniel Murphy.

MLB’s Adam McCalvy reports that the Brewers are also interested in bringing back lefty Wade Miley.
