A flurry of activity and speculation hit the MLB hot stove on Monday. Here are some quick hits from the rumor mill.

Bumgarner-ing Interest

As per Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the San Francisco Giants are indeed shopping ace left-hander, Madison Bumgarner. He writes that the Braves have “checked in” on Bumgarner, and “the Brewers and Phillies […] have had at least preliminary dialogue”.

Bumgarner, 29, has a 3.03 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 255 career appearances (252 starts). The 10-year veteran missed the first three months of the season last year with a fractured bone in his hand suffered on Opening Day.

He returned in early June, making 21 starts through the end of the season, owning a 3.26 ERA, 1.242 WHIP, and career-low 2.53 strikeouts-to-walks (4.13 career average K/BB). Bumgarner is due to make $12 million in 2019 and will become a free agent after the season.

Signings!

The Braves made a couple of solidifying moves on Monday, locking up third baseman Josh Donaldson to a one-year, $23 million deal (Steve Phillips, SiriusXM) and bringing back former catcher Brian McCann on a one-year, $2 million agreement (Mark Bowman, MLB.com).

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report that longtime Cleveland outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million deal.

LeMahieu Market Opens Up, Nationals Kicking Tires

Also from Morosi, the market for former Rockies’ second-baseman DJ LeMahieu is beginning to heat up, with a handful of teams already touching base.

“The Dodgers, Nationals, and Twins have had at least preliminary talks with [LeMahieu]”, according to Morosi.

The 30-year-old Michigan product has a .298/.350/.406 line through eight MLB seasons with a 92 OPS+ rating. He won the NL batting title in 2016, hitting a gaudy .348 on the year.

In an injury-shortened 2018 campaign (hamstring, thumb, oblique), LeMahieu his .276/.321/.428 with 15 homers, 62 RBI, 32 doubles, and an 88 OPS+ over 128 games (533 at-bats).

Morosi also notes that the Nationals have monitored infielders Jed Lowrie, Josh Harrison, and Marwin Gonzalez.

Dietrich Clears Waivers, Becomes Free Agent

Former Marlins’ cog Derek Dietrich became a free agent on Monday after clearing waivers, the team announced. The 29-year-old has a .254/.335/.422 career slash line with 162-game averages of 16 homers, 54 runs batted in, and a 109 OPS+.

In a full season with the Fish in 2018 (149 games, 551 plate appearances; both career-highs), Dietrich hit .265/.330/.421 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI, 26 doubles, and a 112 OPS+.

The Cleveland native plays second and third base, as well as left field. Dietrich is entering his third arbitration-eligible season after making $2.9 million in 2018.

Yankees DFA Torreyes

After claiming right-hander Parker Bridwell off waivers from the Angels, the Yankees designated infielder Ronald Torreyes for assignment, as per the team.

The 26-year-old Venezuelan native hit .280/.294/.370 in 102 plate appearances for New York last season. He slashed .252/.298/.279 in 111 minor-league at-bats, mostly with Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

Over parts of the last four seasons (221 games; 615 PA), Torreyes has a .281/.310/.375 slash line with an 81 OPS+ rating. He plays capable defense at second, third, and shortstop, and would make a ton of sense for any team looking for cheap, reliable roster depth.

Quick Notes

Slugging first-baseman C.J. Cron was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins after being designated for assignment by Tampa Bay last week. The 28-year-old has a .260/.311/.461 slash line through five MLB seasons and hit .253/.323/.493 with 30 homers, 28 doubles, and 74 RBI in 501 at-bats in 2018.

As per Jeff Passan of Yahoo, “former Phillies’ first baseman Tommy Joseph has agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal with the LG Twins in Korea”. The 27-year-old has a .247/.297/.460 slash line with 43 homers and 116 RBI in 142 career games (533 plate appearances).

The Kansas City Royals claimed righty Conner Greene off waivers from St. Louis and designated right-hander Burch Smith for assignment, as per the team.
