Pads Get Big Haul For Latos

The Reds and Padres announced a five-player deal Saturday, as Cincinnati sent right-hander Edinson Volquez and three of its top 10 prospects to the Padres for right-hander Mat Latos.

Along with Volquez, the Padres acquired right-hander Brad Boxberger, infielder Yonder Alonso and catcher Yasmani Grandal. All were recently named among Cincinnati’s top 10 prospects.

The 28-year-old Volquez has a career record of 30-18 with a 4.17 ERA in 74 games (73 starts). He burst onto the scene during his first season in Cincinnati in 2008, going 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA but has struggled since, spending time last season in the Minor Leagues.

The 24-year-old Latos went 9-14 with a 3.47 ERA and .233 average against in 31 starts this past season in San Diego. In 2010, his first full season in the Majors, he set a modern Major League record by allowing two-runs-or-fewer in 15 straight starts of five-or-more innings pitched, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Boxberger, 23, had 11 saves and a 2.03 ERA in 55 relief appearances last season between Double and Triple-A, holding opposing batters to a .152 average. He has a 3.75 career ERA since being selected in the 2009 Draft.

Alonso, 24, hit .330 with five home runs and 15 RBIs in 47 games for the Reds this past season after batting .296 with 24 doubles and 12 home runs in Triple-A. The left-handed hitter also participated in the XM All-Star Futures Game for the second straight season in 2011, starting at first base for the World Team.

Grandal, 23, hit .305 with 31 doubles and 14 home runs in 105 games last season, his first at the professional level, at three different Minor League stops. He is a switch-hitting catcher and was drafted by the Reds in the first round of the 2010 Draft.
