The Mets (21-9) took the first game of the series against the Diamondbacks (15-14) by a score of 8-3 on Tuesday evening at Citi Field. It was another slugfest for New York following the club’s 19-5 win on Monday night against the Nationals. The triumph over Arizona was powered by three big home runs from Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Pete Alonso.

In a solid start to the season, the Mets have won 19 games in April, which ties the National League record for wins in the month. The club is now 13-1 at home this season, the best start through 14 home games in franchise history.

(Box Score)

David Peterson got the start for New York and tossed five innings, allowing just one run on five hits with two strikeouts.

At the plate, the Mets notched nine hits in the win. Tyrone Taylor got the party started with an RBI double in the second to get the Mets on the board. Jose Azocár singled to drive him in, and Francisco launched a two-run home run to make it 4-0, Mets. It was his first as a right-handed batter this season and his sixth overall.

Starling Marte extended the lead with a two-run homer in the third. Tyrone Taylor tacked on another run with an RBI single that scored Luisangel Acuña to make it 7-0, Mets.

In the fourth, Pete Alonso followed with a solo shot — his seventh home run of the season and the 233rd of his career (he’s now 20 home runs away from topping Darryl Strawberry‘s record) — unloading for the Mets’ third home run of the night and stretching the lead to 8-0.

Arizona got on the board in the fifth, scoring a run on a pair of singles and a double to make it 8-1.

In the sixth, José Buttó replaced Peterson and tossed a 1-2-3 inning. He returned for the seventh, striking out four across two scoreless innings while allowing just one walk.

In the eighth, Butto was lifted for Kevin Herget. The reliever allowed a two-out double, and a fielding error by Mark Vientos let a run score to make it 8-2. The Diamondbacks added another run in the ninth off Herget after a pair of singles, a wild pitch, and a groundout brought the score to 8-3.

To note, the Mets’ starting pitchers have now gone 71 innings at home without giving up a home run, which is the longest such streak to begin a season in franchise history. Overall, the pitching staff has allowed just 14 home runs this year, the fewest in the National League.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Tyrone Taylor earns Tuesday’s honor with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate, including a double and two RBI. He made a sensational catch in the outfield to rob Lourdes Gurriel Jr. of extra bases.
