Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports did his weekly column were he does notes on every major league team and of course this time of year most of the talk is trade related.

He believes that outside of very valuable relief pieces in Addison Reed and Jerry Blevins that the New York Mets have little in trade value when it comes to pending free agents.

Heyman points to the weak trade market for hitters and what he calls high salaries for pending free agents in Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce. Granderson is making $15 million this season while Bruce is earning $13 million.

The Mets have Lucas Duda, Neil Walker and Rene Rivera as pending free agent trade pieces. They also have the recently hot hitting Asdrubal Cabrera whom has a cheap option for 2018 that could be attractive to contenders.

“Reed has the most value of the whole bunch,” one rival told Heyman. This makes a ton of sense given the premium that has been put on high end relievers in recent trade markets.

The Royals current turnaround could be good news for the Mets trade chips as it takes Eric Hosmer and Kelvin Herrera off the board for contending teams.

I would also like to see the Mets play Cabrera at third base some over the next two weeks to showcase his versatility. A team like the Red Sox are desperate for an upgrade at third.

Still believe it’s going to be a few weeks before we see any substantial trades with the AL Wild Card wide open and the Colorado Rockies beginning to slip in the NL Wild Card hunt.
