The Mets’ full attention at the moment is on free agent starting pitcher Max Scherzer, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported Sunday evening. Scherzer is expected to make his decision as soon as Sunday night.

At 37 years old, Scherzer still posted a 2.46 ERA, 11.84 K/9 and 5.4 fWAR between the Nationals and Dodgers in 2021.

Andy Martino of SNY followed up by reporting that the Mets have offered Scherzer a contract of more than $40M per year. The length is unknown.

The Mets continue to be linked to fellow starting pitcher Kevin Gausman as well. According to Heyman, the Mets will redirect their attention to him if they miss out on Scherzer.

Gausman, 30, is coming off a career year with the Giants in which he posted a 2.81 ERA and 4.8 fWAR.

New general manager Billy Eppler said he was going to be aggressive on the starting pitching market in his introductory press conference. Clearly, he’s already living up to his word.
