Jon Heyman of MLB Network confirms an earlier report that the Mets have chosen Hensley Meulens to be their next bench coach. The hire was first reported by Jennifer Mercedes of La Vida Baseball.

Meulens, 52, has served in numerous roles in his long-time coaching career, most recently as the San Francisco Giants’ bench coach the last two seasons. He was responsible for outfield defense instruction, position, and preparation.

He spent the previous eight seasons as the team’s hitting coach, including the 2011 season when Carlos Beltran was traded to the Giants.

The former big leaguer also managed the Netherlands in the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classic. He won three World Series rings as a coach under Bruce Bochy in San Francisco.

Jerry Narron, Fredi Gonzalez, and Joey Cora also interviewed for the position.
