It looks like this is the story that won’t go away this season. It feels like every week going back to Spring Training we’ve been reading or hearing about Matt Harvey after every mound appearance and then some.
I often wonder if it’s like this with all teams regarding their top prospects or if this is something that is exclusive to Mets fans?
We like to hold all our prospects like precious gems and perish the thought of ever trading one of them even though the Mets haven’t had a Rookie of the Year since Dwight Gooden 28 years ago in 1984. Man, that’s a long time.
Anyway, this morning in the New York Post, Mike Puma spoke to a Mets source who told him that if Miguel Batista “bombs on Saturday” don’t be surprised to see Matt Harvey get called up to make his debut.
Apparently, the reason the Mets opted against promoting Harvey for the Saturday start was because of their reluctance to exposing Batista to waivers because he was the pitcher on the bubble and they didn’t want to risk losing him.
Batista has had a little bit success for the Mets as a starter as opposed to his ineffectiveness in the bullpen.
In the meantime, Harvey gets a little extra time to work on his new changeup and refine his delivery as well as improving his command.
Yesterday, it sounded like Harvey would stay put until September, today we’re back to talking about a possible promotion after the weekend. It’s a mixed message and it seems to change virtually on a daily basis.
I just hope they know what they’re doing. I also wonder what goes through Harvey’s mind as he reads all this ever-changing strategy on his development and career track.
