The Miami Marlins and San Francisco Giants have had deeper discussions regarding a Giancarlo Stanton trade according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

The source also told Feinsand that the Giants are currently the favorites to get Stanton, but the Cardinals may still be contenders.

The Cardinals joined the Giants by making a formal trade offer for Stanton on Sunday according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Craig Mish of SirusXM reported yesterday that the names discussed in the potential Giants-Marlins deal were Joe Panik and top prospects Tyler Beede and Chris Shaw for Stanton and Dee Gordon.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic thinks that the Giants would be willing to take on a good portion of Stanton’s remaining contract. Though they may need to shed salary in other trades to make it work.

Stanton, 28, is signed through the 2027 season and has a club option for 2028. He also has an opt out after the 2020 season. He is currently owed $295 million dollars.

With the new Marlins ownership reportedly seeking to slash payroll down to $90 million, the slugger’s contract will likely be the first to be shopped.

In 159 games (692 at-bats) with Miami in 2017, Stanton clubbed a league leading 59 home runs and drove in 132 runs while hitting to a .281/.376/.631 clip and posting a 7.6 WAR.

The Marlins have yet to having a winning season since Stanton debuted in 2010 and with the team looking to rebuild yet again, it doesn’t look like they will in the immediate future.
