wilpon alderson

After a brutal loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night there’s only one thing on every Mets fans’ mind this morning; what is Sandy Alderson waiting for?

Kevin Kernan of the New York Post spoke to several scouts after last night’s loss and they all had the same reaction.

“Why don’t the Mets trade for some help? Any help?”

“How could they just sit back and do nothing?’’

It’s getting real old having to watch the Mets offense – or lack of it – squander one great pitching performance after another.

It sucks that Bartolo Colon didn’t come away with a win last night, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. The Mets have been wasting pitching gems all season long.

At the end of the season the Mets epitaph will likely read, “We had the pitching, but…”

Unfortunately for the Mets, we have a GM who is unwilling to part with any prospects to get the bat this team needs.

He refuses to deal from his strength in young pitching to address any weakness in the lineup. He’s content to wait another year if he has to – even in a season when the NL East is up for grabs and well within our reach.

Oh I’m sure that Sandy Alderson will likely find some small fix as he looks to peddle the likes of Dillon Gee or Jon Niese. Or perhaps he’ll find some spare part on the waiver wire.

But don’t hold your breath waiting for some Mike Piazza or Gary Carter type deal. There will be no difference maker bringing his bat to Flushing in July. It’s simply not in Sandy Alderson’s DNA. This is not how he operates.

Even with the Mets offense ranked 22nd in batting average at .242 and 28th in slugging percentage at .368, there’s just not enough motivation for Alderson to make that big move, assuming there was actually a big move to be made.

Big moves cost big prospects. Big moves cost big money.

Oh… Did you forget money? Did you forget about who owns the team? Did you even consider whether Alderson even has one shiny nickel to add a bat in the unlikely event he was actually willing to move some prospects to acquire one? Get a grip…

I know this is not what you want to hear, but it is the reality. It’s the Mets’ reality. It’s our reality.

A team source already admitted the Mets won’t have what it takes to acquire Ben Zobrist. He’s too rich for their blood. And that’s not even a player that’s remotely close to being a difference maker, he’s just a useful piece and small upgrade.

So get used to more 3-2, 2-1, 2-0, and 1-0 losses. Get used to seeing Daniel Muno, Eric Campbell and Darrell Ceciliani (or something just as appalling) coming up in the ninth inning with the Mets down by a run.

This is our reality. And all the whiny “Do Something” posts you’ll read today isn’t going to change the reality.
