According to Adam Rubin, the New York Mets will be calling Gavin Cecchini up to the Majors. At this time, no corresponding move has been announced.
Due to his difficulties throwing and the rise of Amed Rosario, Cecchini has transitioned to second base this season where he has looked much better defensively. In addition to his ability to play second and short, Cecchini has been working out at third base this season in what has been an effort by the Mets to make all their prospects more versatile.
It will be interesting to see how the Mets deploy Cecchini. His best position is second, but he is blocked there by Neil Walker. However, due to Walker’s defensive struggles at second this season, the Mets could use this time to transition Walker to third.
Cecchini could also play third base allowing Jose Reyes to play shortstop where he’s played his whole career. There’s also the possibility Cecchini could be called up to play third over Wilmer Flores against right-handed pitching.
Finally, the Mets could just be calling up Cecchini to be a versatile bench player. It would be a curious decision to do that with a 23 year old former first round pick, but the Mets may feel as if they don’t have better options at the present.
In 30 games for Triple-A Las Vegas so far this season, Cecchini is slashing .254/.316/.369 with two home runs, eight doubles, and three stolen bases, striking out only 13 times.
