The New York Mets (40-57) fell to the San Diego Padres (42-61) to the score of 3-2 on Monday night at Citi Field. In the end, it was fielding miscues and poor situational hitting that led to the Mets demise. Attendance was reported at 21,731.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom continued to pitch at an elite level on Monday night at Citi Field.

deGrom took advantage of the aggressive Padres hitting strategy in the second inning. Eric Hosmer hit the first pitch he saw for a single to right. Christian Villanueva also swung at the first pitch he saw except he grounded into a 6-3 double play. Freddy Galvis swung at the first pitch and swung right through it. He would end up popping out to third to end the inning.

Jake cruised through the third and fourth innings retiring all six hitters he faced while striking out three Friars in that span.

The Padres were able to gain the lead in the fifth inning thanks in part to a fielding miscue. Jake fell behind Hosmer 3-0 but struck him out swinging for the first out. Villanueva hit a fly ball to right field but the ball hit the glove of Jose Bautista as he was trying to make a fading catch. After Villanueva stole second on passed ball, Galvis hit a run scoring single to center to tie the game at 1-1. Next batter Manuel Margot hit a triple to center giving the Padres a 2-1 lead. Austin Hedges was intentionally walked who stole second with two outs. deGrom walked Travis Jankowski to load bases but got Carlos Asuaje to pop out in foul territory to end the inning and threat.

Wil Myers led the sixth inning off with a double. Hosmer hit a grounder to short but a charging Rosario missed the ball allowing Myers to score extending the Padres lead to 3-1. Hosmer was later thrown out by a country mile trying to steal second and deGrom retired the following two hitters to end the frame.

DeGrom retired all three Padres in order in the seventh with two pop outs followed by a strike out. Jake retired the first two batters of the eighth inning before giving up a ground rule double to Myers. Jake would strike out Hosmer on a 2-2 curve to end the frame. deGrom finished the evening with a 8 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO and tossed 113 pitches with 83 of them for strikes.

Robert Gsellman pitched a clean ninth as he retired the side in order.

Rosario laid a perfect bunt down the third base side for a base hit with one out in the third inning. It was his first bunt hit of the season. Rosario would steal second with two outs and score on a Wilmer Flores single to center to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Flores would advance to second on the throw. Bautista flied out to right to end the inning.

Conforto led off the fourth with a single to left but was left stranded. Mesoraco and Nimmo struck out for the first two outs and Reyes grounded out on a soft grounder up the first base side that was shuttle passed by Lucchesi.

With Joey Bats on first with one out in the sixth, Conforto hit a single advancing Bautista to third. Mesoraco whiffed on a pitch in the dirt for the second out but Nimmo got hit in the knee with a pitch which loaded the bases. On a 1-2 pitch, Reyes hit a dribbler up the third base side for hit shaving the Padres lead to 3-2. deGrom grounded out to end the inning.

The Mets went quietly in the seventh and eighth innings and headed into the ninth trailing 3-2. Reyes reached on a rare error by Hosmer to lead off the ninth. Pinch-hitter Ty Kelly popped out in foul territory for the first out while attempting to bunt over Reyes. Rosario struck out swinging on a pitch outside of the strike-zone for the second out. With Walk-Off Wilmer on deck, Cabrera struck out to end the game. Collectively, the Mets hitters left 17 base runners stranded.
