The Mets lost the second game of their doubleheader by a score of 3-1. They are now 4-2 against the Phillies this year.

Pitching

Corey Oswalt looked pretty good tonight. He retired the first 12 guys he faced and struck out seven. His velocity was higher tonight than it was in other starts and his curve looked pretty good. The Phillies lineup is not that bad either.

He actually carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He did walk three in the inning and had the bases loaded with two-outs and the pitcher up. Naturally, Aaron Nola double home three runs and that ended the no-hitter and shutout.

Oswalt’s final line was 6 IP, 3 ER, H, 3 BB, 7 K. He didn’t allow a hit to a position player and is a sudden supporter of the DH.

Paul Sewald pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning while Jacob Rhame and Jerry Blevins combined for a scoreless eighth inning. Blevins walked a batter in the ninth but Jose Reyes misplayed a rather easy ground ball and the dueling one-hitters ended.

Offense

Wilmer Flores had a hit in the first inning and then Aaron Nola retired the next 18 guys. Turns out he is a really really good pitcher. Michael Conforto drew a walk against him in the seventh and that broke up his stretch of 18 straight retired.

In the ninth inning, Nimmo was hit by a pitch with two outs and Wilmer Flores doubled him home. Conforto then drew a walk to set things up for Devin Mesoraco. He struck out though and the Mets lost this one.
