NIMMBOMB! Brandon Nimmo hit a walk-off homer to give the Mets (37-53) a 3-0 win against the Philadelphia Phillies (51-40). All three wins on this home stand have been by the walk-off homer variety.
Pitching
We are not worthy of Jacob deGrom. The Mets ace fired eight scoreless innings tonight and lowered his ERA to 1.68. Dwight Gooden (1985) edged out deGrom for best first half ERA for a Met in a single season by a decimal.
However, as John Edwards pointed out on Twitter, the league ERA in the first half of 2018 is 4.11 but that number in 1985 was 3.73. That said, Gooden threw 32 more innings. So both are amazing in their own rights, let us appreciate them.
Jake had a really easy first three innings because the Phillies went up hacking and could not really do anything with that. They worked him a bit harder in innings 4-6 but still had nothing to show for. deGrom walked Hoskins to leadoff the sixth but struck out Carlos Santana and Nick Williams to end the threat.
In the seventh, the Phillies got a runner on but Matt den Dekker made a sliding catch with a runner on first to make sure the Phillies did not capitalize on their threat. deGrom got the eighth and struck out Odubel Hererra to end his night. His ERA is in a tight battle with Jose Reyes‘ batting average.
Jeurys Familia pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning and Robert Gsellman pitched a scoreless 10th inning.
Offense
You probably can’t expect much offense when Matt den Dekker is the number six hitter.
Amed Rosario had another really nice night. He went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Just keep playing him.
In the tenth, Rosario doubled with two outs and Jose Reyes walked to bring up Brandon Nimmo. The All-Star snub won it on one pitch and sent the Mets home happy. Not bad for a fourth outfielder. 🙂
On deck
Steven Matz toes the rubber and will take on the Nationals in a four game series. I enjoy bringing down other teams into the pit of misery with us.
