The New York Mets (11-8) got to Adam Wainwright early and hung on to win as they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals (10-9) tonight 5-4.
Offense:
Robinson Cano sparked some early offense in the top of the first with a line drive double to kick off a two-out rally.
Michael Conforto then walked to make it runners at first and second with two outs. The next batter, Wilson Ramos, muscled a base hit up the middle to drive in the first run of the game.
This was also the first time in New York Mets history that any Mets lineup scored a first inning run against Adam Wainwright.
J.D. Davis followed up with a double on a sharp line drive to right field to score the second run of the inning.
In the third, Cano cashed in again on a sharp line drive to right field, Juan Lagares came around to score the third Mets run of the game, giving them a 3-0 lead.
Ramos drove in his second run of the game during the fourth inning, grounding softly to third base on a fielder’s choice allowing Pete Alonso to score safely giving the Mets a 4-0 lead.
Alonso then hammered a home run, his seventh of the year, to dead center field to stretch the Mets lead back to four runs.
Pitching:
Jason Vargas got the start on the mound and had one of his best outings of the year. Despite pitching four innings , he only allowed one earned run, three hits, walked three and struck out three.
Seth Lugo worked the fifth and sixth innings. His only hiccup was giving up a two-run home run to pinch-hitter Lane Thomas which was his first major league home run.
Jeurys Familia pitched the top of the seventh inning, turning in a much needed scoreless frame. Then Familia went back out there to start the top of the eighth inning , but was pulled after getting only one out.
Justin Wilson came in to face Dexter Fowler, with a runner on second with one out. Wilson got Fowler to ground out to third base. J.D. Davis made an incredible diving stop but threw it away for an error to allow another run to score.
Kolten Wong was the next batter, creating a lefty-on-lefty situation but that resulted into a walk on four pitches.
Now with runners on the corners with one out, Mickey Callaway made the decision to bring in Robert Gsellman .
Gsellman got the pinch hitter Jedd Gyorko to pop up to Robinson Cano for the second out. Then, secured the third out of the inning by getting Matt Carpenter to ground-out to Pete Alonso.
Edwin Diaz was called in for the save opportunity with the Mets having a 5-4 lead going into the ninth. Diaz secured his seventh save of the year despite being a little shaky, giving up a walk to Marcell Ozuna, and a base hit to Jose Martinez with already two outs in the inning. But, Diaz hung in there and got Yadier Molina to fly out to center to end the game.
On Deck:
The Mets will look to win their second game tommorow afternoon vs the Cardinals. The pitcher that will be starting for the Mets is still unknown with the injury of Jacob deGrom. The Cardinals have Miles Mikolas scheduled to pitch against the Metropolitans. Game time will be at 2:10 p.m. EST.
