MAKE THAT EIGHT WINS IN A ROW!

The New York Mets (10-1) swept the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night and won their eighth consecutive game while also wrapping up a 6-0 road trip.

Pitching

A few weeks ago, the Mets sent down a pitcher named Zack Wheeler. Today, they recalled the former top prospect and he sure looked like the guy the Mets traded for in 2013.

Wheeler had a so-so first inning, but didn’t let it get to him. He gave up a home run to Miguel Rojas and also walked Justin Bour but he settled in after that. From the second inning on, Wheeler retired 18-of-19 hitters including 16 in a row to end his night. He also sat 94-96 mph with his fastball and touched 97 on occasion.

If you had Zack Wheeler as the first Met to pitch into the seventh inning and have the best start by a Met all season, then please collect your prize. Wheeler’s final line was: 7 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, 7 K, and perhaps most impressive, just 83 pitches. He has likely earned another start.

Robert Gsellman took over for Wheeler in the eighth inning. Gsellman, who has been battling the flu, struck out the side and has now struck out 12-of-27 batters he has faced this season.

Jerry Blevins began the ninth inning to face Derek Dietrich and did his job. The Mets then gave the ball to former Marlin, AJ Ramos to finish up the game. Ramos walked his first hitter but got Starlin Castro to ground into a double-play to end the game.

Offense

The Mets offense was stymied by Jarlin Garcia. Garcia no-hit the Mets for six innings but he is still building his way up to becoming a starter so Don Mattingly pulled him after six innings.

Todd Frazier got the Mets first hit with two outs in the seventh inning off Drew Steckenrider but the Mets could not capitalize on it. In the eighth inning however, the floodgates opened.

Kevin Plawecki was hit on the hand to begin the eighth inning by a 98 mph fastball. He stayed in the game to run the bases but later came out. Michael Conforto, pinch-hitting against the lefty, doubled into the gap in right-center.

Adrian Gonzalez drove in Plawecki and Conforto on a pinch-hit, two-run single in the next at-bat. Asdrubal Cabrera reached on a miscue by Starlin Castro and Wilmer Flores made the fish pay. He hit a ground-rule double to drive in another run and the Marlins walked Yoenis Cespedes to face Todd Frazier with the bases loaded. Frazier drove home another run on a sacrifice fly.

This team just never knows when to quit!!

On deck

The Mets return home to face the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night. Steven Matz has the start for New York as he looks to keep the good times rollin’!
