The Mets narrowly beat the Marlins on Tuesday night by a score of 6-5 at Marlins Park. (Box Score)

Pitching

Jason Vargas pitched for the Mets and had a rough first inning. He gave up a double to Curtis Granderson and a double to Brian Anderson. He managed to work out of further damage.

The second inning also featured a couple of base runners, but he got out of that jam too by getting Granderson to fly out.

In the third, he gave up two singles with one-out but managed to get a double play to end that threat. In the fourth, he gave up a lead-off double to Lewis Brinson but again found a way out of the jam.

In the fifth, Starlin Castro had a two-out homer.  Martin Prado followed with a double but again, Vargas wiggled out of the jam. It was a night of tightrope walking for Vargas but he got through it. His final line was: 5 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, BB, 2 K

Robert Gsellman had a scoreless inning in which he had a couple of strikeouts.

Seth Lugo had his second straight tough outing. He retired the first two before allowing four straight to reach and make the score 6-4.

He started pitching the eighth too for some reason and loaded the bases with one-out. Justin Wilson came in to get a ground out and strikeout to preserve the lead.

Wilson stayed on to pitch the ninth and secured the save. It was not without stress though. He hit Lewis Brinson and then gave up a one-out hit to Chad Wallach, putting the tying run on second and the winning run on first.

Miguel Rojas hit a screaming line drive to shortstop, that Amed Rosario caught and flipped to second for a game-ending double play.

Offense

The Mets offense did most of their damage early. Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil singled and Michael Conforto walked to load the bases for Wilson Ramos in the first inning. He and Dominic Smith both singled in runs to give them an early 2-0 lead. Amed Rosario doubled in two runs to then make it 4-0. Juan Lagares had a fielder’s choice to make it 5-0.

The offense was relatively quiet until the seventh when Ramos and Smith both singled. J.D. Davis walked with two-outs to load the bases for Brandon Nimmo. He was hit by a pitch to give the Mets a 6-2 lead at the time. Nimmo left the game, though the preliminary X-Rays were negative.

Smith had two hits in his first start of the season and Ramos had two hits of his own. Both are hitting .444 in the very early season. Rosario was on base twice and stole his first base of the season.
