Mets 3, Cardinals 3- Cover Field, Port St. Lucie, FL (Boxscore)

Pitching

Steven Matz started the game off allowing a home run to Harrison Bader on the second pitch of the game and the Cardinals were quickly ahead 1-0. Following the homer, Matz sent the Cards down in order via the ground out, strikeout, and fly out, respectively, to end the inning and ultimately his outing for the day.

A 30-pounds lighter, Jeurys Familia came in to pitch the second inning in his first appearance of 2020. Familia retired Dylan Carlson and Andrew Knizner for the first two outs of the inning with pop-up outs. Yairo Munoz singled for the Cardinals first base hit of the game. Familia walked Austin Dean and John Nogowski bounced one to J.D. Davis at third base to end the inning.

Jersey native Brad Brach took the bump for the third inning, and after an error in the outfield, Bader took second base. DeJong came up with a man on second and struck out swinging for the second out. After hitting Wieters on the jersey, Carlson struck out.

Franklyn Kilome came in for the eighth inning and was greeted poorly with a triple from first batter he faced, and a two-run home run that tied the game 3-3. He retired the next three on a ground out, fly out, and strike out.

Harol Gonzalez closed out this one for the Mets in the ninth. After two quick outs, Gonzalez gave up three hits, but with a great throw out at home plate by Quinn Brodey, the inning ended.

Offense

Leading off as a DH for the second time this spring, Amed Rosario grounded out to first for out number one. Shortstop prospect Andres Gimenez batted second and grounded out. Two outs away in the bottom half of the inning, and J.D Davis comes to bat. After working Adam Wainwright to a 3-2 count, he draws a walk for the Mets first baserunner of the game. Former Nationals infielder, Matt Adams takes the box with a man on and two outs in the inning and pops out for the third out of the inning.

Jake Marisnick led off the second inning with the Mets’ first home run of the spring to tie the game at one. Tomas Nido came up and smacked one to right field for a base hit. Nido stole second for the team’s first stolen base of the spring; Nido didn’t have a stolen base all year in 2019.

Luis Guillorme took his second at bat of the day and beat out a bunt for a hit. After banging one off his foot, Ryan Cordell knocked one into the left field corner for a double, scoring Guillorme to make it 2-1 in the fourth inning. Following Tim Tebow’s walk, Rosario came up to bat and grounded into the force out at second. Andres Gimenez came up with runners on first and third and took four pitches for a walk. The bases were then loaded for JD Davis with one out away, and he flew out to the second basemen and Cordell tags at third to make it 3-1.
