Game Summary

The Mets (8-9) were the beneficiaries of some sloppy play by the Washington Nationals (3-13) this afternoon and took the second game of the series 8-2. Mike Pelfrey started and looked pretty good, while Carlos Beltran and Ryan Church continued their hot hitting.

Mets Pitching

Mike Pelfrey had a solid outing this afternoon which was all the more impressive when you consider he hasn’t been on a mound in ten days because of the forearm injury. He lasted 5.2 innings allowing just 2 earned runs on 6 hits, and improved his record to 2-0. Pelfrey walked 3 and struck out 1, and lowered his ERA to 6.32.

Sean Green faced one batter to end the 6th inning. Bobby Parnell is proving to be quite a weapon in the bullpen, firing another scoreless inning and lowering his ERA to 1.86. Brian Stokes pitched the final 2 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 walks but keeping the Nationals off the board.

Mets Hitting

Carlos Beltran had three hits to increase his league leading average to .415. He scored two runs and also stole his first base of the season. MVP, MVP, MVP…

The more they try and mess with Ryan Church, the better he performs. Church had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s in the game and is batting .358 this season. There is no reason for the Mets to keep pulling him out of the lineup. He is one of the most consistent bats in the lineup and is back to the form he showed us last season before he got hurt. Leave the guy alone and stop messing with him.

David Wright went hitless, but did get on base via a walk and an error and scored both times. He also made some sick plays at third base and I gotta tell you, this might be the best we’ve ever seen of David Wright defensively. He also stole his second base of the season.

Game Notes

Left on base was only 8 today which is actually an improvement as sad as that might sound. Daniel Murphy made an incredible sliding catch in the game and then he jumped up and fired a laser to first to double up the runner and get the double play.

Player of the Game

Carlos Beltran gets the honors this time.
