Game Recap: Floundering Mets Lose to Reds 2-1 In Extras

There’s not much more to say. The reeling Mets lost 2-1 in this one and dropped the series finale to the Reds. Adam Duvall hit a walk-off homer in the tenth to secure the victory.

Pitching

Zack Wheeler looked really good through his first five innings. At one point, he even set down 12 in a row. The right-hander had five strikeouts in that time and yielded just three base runners. He had problems in the sixth inning though, but was able to tight rope out of danger.

He walked Jesse Winker to lead off the inning and Jose Peraza followed with a bunt single. Joey Votto then followed with a single to score Winker and move Peraza to third base. Wheeler then struck out Eugenio Suarez, got Alex Blandino to pop up, and struck out Tony Cruz to get out of the jam.

Robert Gsellman got the seventh inning of the game after Wheeler left for a pinch-hitter. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning for the Mets. Gsellman also pitched the eighth inning while also battling the rain and the 2-3-4 of the Reds batting order. He pitched two perfect innings.

Seth Lugo pitched the bottom of the ninth inning and set the Reds down in order. He was pitching on back-to-back days for the first time in his career.

AJ Ramos pitched the tenth inning of the game. Adam Duvall greeted him immediately with a walk-off home run.

Offense

Where to begin?

Asdrubal Cabrera doubled with two outs in the first inning because he was supposed to be hitting third. Problem was, the person who wrote the lineup had Cabrera hitting second and Wilmer Flores hitting third.

Jim Riggleman realized this and came out to tell the umpires. After much confusion, and I really mean confusion, they called Cabrera’s at-bat as an unofficial at-bat and Jay Bruce was the third out of the inning even though he never hit. Got all that? Good, test on it tomorrow.

In the third inning, Brandon Nimmo led off the inning with a triple and the number two hitter, Asdrubal Cabrera, brought him home on a ground out.

The Mets had a chance in the fourth inning when Amed Rosario singled and Brandon Nimmo walked. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize on that opportunity.

Nimmo reached base three times in the game. He really needs to play more.
