The New York Mets (50-66) defeated the New York Yankees (74-44) 8-5 at Yankee Stadium on Monday night. Tonight’s victory secured the series win over the cross-town rivals as the Mets have won four out of the six contests.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom whiffed Brett Gardner to lead off the home half of the first. Jake struck out Didi Gregorius on a foul tip after walking Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton advanced to second courtesy of a softly hit single by Aaron Hicks but both base runners were left stranded as deGrom induced a fly out off the bat of Miguel Andujar.

deGrom set down all three Yanks he faced in the second inning including two strikeouts. However, in the third inning, the Yankees began to mount a comeback.

The first two batters reached base as Austin Romine singled and Gardner drew a walk. Stanton grounded out into a force out to second but Jeff McNeil was unable to come up with the throw to first allowing Romine to score and cut the Mets lead in half, 2-1. Gregorius flew out to center for the second out. But Hicks lined a two out RBI single to scoring Stanton and tie the game 2-2.    

Jake struck out the first two batters in the fourth and got the third out catching a shuttle pass on the run tossed by first baseman Wilmer Flores. In the fifth, Jake gave up a one-out double to Gardner. deGrom then struck out Stanton, but Didi hit a run scoring single to inch the Yankees closer, 4-3.

deGrom returned to pitch the seventh and got former Met Neil Walker to ground out. He struck out Romine in what would be the last batter he would face on the night. Jake ended his evening with a final stat line of 6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO. deGrom threw 114 pitches with 79 of them for strikes.

Jerry Blevins answered the call to the bullpen and retired Gardner on three pitches to end the inning.

Seth Lugo came in to pitch the eighth inning and retired the first two batters. After walking Hicks, Andujar launched a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence cutting the Mets to 7-5. Greg Bird bunted for a single towards the third base side of the infield as the Mets were in a defensive shift against the lefty. Lugo retired Gleyber Torres on a fly out to center ending the inning.

Robert Gsellman pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to secure his seventh save of the season.

Hitting

The Mets offense came out of the gate swinging against Yankees starter Luis Severino. Amed Rosario led the game off with a home run and the next batter Brandon Nimmo doubled to right. After Michael Conforto struck out, Flores hit a dribbler about five feet in front of home plate to advance Nimmo to third.

After falling behind in the count McNeil added the second run of the inning with a line drive to center scoring Nimmo. Todd Frazier grounded into a force out to end the inning as the Mets gave Jake a 2-0 lead before taking the mound. 

Severino collected two outs to start the second inning with a strikeout to Austin Jackson and a fly out to Jose Bautista. Next batter Devin Mesoraco singled and Rosario followed with another single. Rosario stole his thirteenth base of the year as he swiped second with Nimmo in the box who would later walk to load the bases. However, the inning would end with a Conforto strike out.

The Mets went into the fourth inning with the game tied. Jackson led the frame off with a single, Joey Bats then broke the tie with an opposite field two-run homer giving the Mets a 4-2 lead.

Frazier led off the sixth inning with a home run giving the Mets a 5-3 lead. Jackson and Bautista both struck out followed by a pop out by Mesoraco. With one out in the seventh Nimmo and Conforto hit back-to-back solo home runs extending the lead over the Bronx Bombers 7-3.

With one out in the ninth, Conforto was hit by a pitch followed by a Flores single. McNeil then hit a ground ball to short which Didi threw out Flores at second, but Torres lost the ball during the transfer allowing Conforto to score and add an insurance run to give the Mets a 8-5 lead. Frazier and Jackson singled, singled but Bautista grounded out to end the inning with the bases loaded.

Each Met hitter had at least one hit and they had 15 hits as a team. Mets hitters also hit a season-high five home runs.

On Deck

The New York Mets head to Baltimore, MD for a two game set against the Orioles. The Mets will send Jason Vargas (2-8, 8.75 ERA) to the hill as Baltimore will counter with righty Andrew Cashner (3-10, 4.83 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM ET. Game will be televised on SNY and broadcast on WOR.
