The New York Mets (41-57) defeated the Sand Diego Padres (42-62) by a score of 6-3 on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

Pitching

Zack Wheeler doubled up on the slider to strike out Wil Myers and close out a perfect top of the first.

Wheeler worked around an Eric Hosmer leadoff single, and was helped out by a nice running play by Jose Bautista that led to a 9-to-3 double play putout to end the second.

The Padres loaded the bases in the third, as both Austin Hedges and Manuel Margot singled and Carlos Asuaje drew a two out walk. Myers then lined a two out single to left to cut the lead to 3-2, but Asuaje was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the inning.

Wheeler bounced back and settled into a nice little groove. Over the next four innings, he struck out both Franmil Reyes and Hunter Renfroe and retired twelve Padres hitters in a row to close out his night.

Wheeler lasted seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three.

Seth Lugo relieved Wheeler, and he continued the success with a 1-2-3 inning of his own in the seventh.

The Padres cut into the lead against Lugo in the ninth. Margot led off the inning with a single, and two batters later he scored on a Myers double to make it 6-3.

Lugo bounced back to end the game with a Hosmer strike out and Renfroe pop out to McNeil.

Hitting

Amed Rosario drew a walk leading off the game, Wilmer Flores lined a one out single, and Michael Conforto reached on an infield single to load the bases with two outs. Devin Mesoraco then lined a bases clearing double to give the Mets an early 3-0 lead.

After the Padres chipped into the lead, Conforto increased the difference to 5-2 with a two run shot into the bullpen. Conforto is hitting .417 with three home runs and 10 RBI’s in his last eight games.

The Mets added another run in the bottom of the fourth as Rosario lined a two out triple and then came into score on an Asdrubal Cabrera single to make it 6-2.

Wheeler picked up his seventh hit of the season, a two out double in the bottom of the sixth.

Jeff McNeil pinch hit for Phillip Evans in the bottom of the eighth and he picked up his first career hit with a single up the middle.
