Jose Bautista gave the New York Mets a 5-1 walk-off win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Citi Field on Friday night with a ninth inning grand slam.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom‘s war against the win stat continued tonight.

He went eight innings and only allowed one run. deGrom gave up a leadoff double in the first inning but worked around it. He subsequently gave up a two-out triple in the second (partially because someone left the bullpen door open again).

His only real blemish was a home run to Willy Adames. He did not get the win despite this great pitching performance. His final line was: 8 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 8 K. His season ERA is down to 1.79.

Jeurys Familia came in for the ninth. He loaded the bases with one-out but got out of the jam. He got a ground ball to first but Wilmer Flores made a high throw home only to be saved by Devin Mesoraco. He then struck out Adames.

Offense

The Mets were stifled by the Rays “opener.” Ryne Stanek was really good in his two innings of work.

Their first run came in the third inning. Brandon Nimmo reached on an error and scored on Asdrubal Cabrera‘s RBI single.

In the sixth, Wilmer Flores was thrown out trying to score from first on a Todd Frazier double. It was a bad send by Glen Sherlock.

In the ninth, Todd Frazier walked to leadoff the inning. Mesoraco then singled. Amed Rosario bunted them to second and third respectively. Dominic Smith couldn’t get them home so the Rays walked Brandon Nimmo to load the bases for Jose Bautista. Bautista hit a ball as far as he hit it against the Rangers in the 2015 ALDS. The first walk-off of his career and it was a grand slam.

Bautista also walked twice in the game. Mesoraco had two hits and a walk.

On Deck

Steven Matz will get the ball against Blake Snell at 4:10 p.m on Saturday at Citi Field as the Mets look to take their third straight win.
