Mets veteran infielders Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie are both likely to begin the 2019 season on the injured list.

When Mets manager Mickey Callaway was asked today about the two being ready for Opening Day he told Anthony Dicomo of MLB.com, “I just don’t see it.”

Lowrie, signed a two-year deal in the offseason with Mets, has not been participating in baseball activities according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. The 34-year-old was diagnosed with a left knee capsule sprain on Feb. 23.

The former Oakland A’s infielder is coming off back-to-back seasons with a WAR of at least 4.0 and .800 OPS. He was expected to primarily third base to begin the season for the Mets.

Frazier, coming off a disappointing 2018 season, is dealing with a left oblique strain. Puma notes that Frazier is hitting in the cage and taking ground balls, but there’s no timetable for his return.

Jeff McNeil has played third base this spring more often than initially expected given the injuries to aforementioned veterans. The Mets also have infielders Adeiny Hechavarria, Luis Guillorme, and J.D. Davis in major league camp battling for a spot.
