For the bulk of the night, the New York Mets (23-33) offense was stymied by the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen (25-31). However, the team found a way to rally late as a Francisco Lindor RBI single in the bottom of the seventh tied the game at two. One inning later, it was a former Diamondback in J.D. Martinez who hit a solo home run that ended up being the game-winning hit as the Mets picked up a 3-2 victory for their second win on this homestand.

Right out of the gate,  Lindor singled to center field to extend his hit streak to nine games. One pitch into the following batter, D’Backs starter Zac Gallen ended up having to leave the game due to a right hamstring strain and was replaced by Bryce Jarvis.

Arizona did not get much offense against Christian Scott, but they found a way to put up a pair of runs against him in the third. With two men on and one out, Ketel Marte hit a double down the right field line that drove in Gabriel Moreno and Corbin Carroll to put the Diamondbacks ahead, 2-1.

Besides the third inning, Scott was able to put up a good outing. He went five innings, allowed two runs on four hits, walked a batter, and struck out four on 91 pitches (58 strikes) in the no-decision. The 24-year-old has gone at least five innings in four of his first five major league starts.

While the Mets as a team went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, they were able to get the timely hits when they needed it. One of those hits came in the seventh. Pete Alonso came off the bench to pinch-hit for Brett Baty and he had a one-out double against Joe Mantiply. Two batters later, after a pitching change, Lindor tied the game with a base hit to right against Ryan Thompson.

The Mets bullpen did a good job keeping their offense in the game after Scott’s night was done. Adrian Houser had one of his better outings of the season in relief of Scott as he threw two hitless innings, allowed a walk, and struck out two on 28 pitches (16 strikes). Out of the seven batters he faced, four of them hit a groundball, which is Houser’s specialty.

Then, it was Danny Young‘s turn in the eighth after he was called up on Thursday due to Jorge López being designated for assignment. Young threw a 1-2-3 eighth with a pair of swinging strikeouts (10 of 14 pitches for strikes) as he picked up his second win of the season.

In the bottom of the eighth, Martinez provided the heroics with a solo home run to center. His fourth of the year on a first-pitch sinker gave New York a 3-2 lead.

Reed Garrett ended up getting the ninth inning and the save opportunity. Although he walked Christian Walker to lead off the frame, he was able to retire the next three batters he faced in order to pick up his third save of the year.

Player of The Game

At times, it was Lindor who carried the offense in this game to give them a chance to win. His four-hit performance tied a season-high (April 24 against the Giants). Over the course of his nine-game hit streak, he has recorded multiple hits in four of those games.
