Francisco Lindor. Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

In a season that has been difficult for so many within the New York Mets organization, Francisco Lindor continues to shine. The shortstop had another big moment in Saturday’s loss against the Seattle Mariners, a moment that put him in some pretty company at his position. With the Mets trailing by a score of 7-4, Lindor stepped up to the plate with one on in the sixth inning.

The four-time All-Star put a good swing on a pitch from Mariners left-hander Gabe Speier, driving an 85 mph slider down the left field line. Fortunately for Lindor, the ball struck the foul pole, awarding him with a two-run home run to cut the deficit to one. That meant that he had another season with at least 25 doubles, 25 home runs, and 25 stolen bases, something that only had ever been done multiple times by two other shortstops: Jimmy Rollins and Hanley Ramírez.

Lindor joined a pretty illustrious group within the history of the Mets as well, being the fourth player to ever reach those statistical milestones in one season. Darryl Strawberry, Howard Johnson, and David Wright are the only other players to have a 25-25-25 season in a Mets uniform. Pretty good company when you consider the kind of impact each of those players had.

The 29-year-old has accomplished some remarkable things in recent months, but it is clear that he is not satisfied. He wants more over the final four month of the season. “Pray for me,” Lindor said about a potential 30-30 season. “I want it. Put good vibes for me out in the world.” Before last night, Carlos Beltrán in 2008 was the last Met to have 25 home runs and 25 stolen bases in one season.

Lindor has enjoyed a fantastic run since the All-Star break, slashing .274/.358/.435 with six home runs, 21 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases. He did not enjoy a strong start to the season, but the last few months have showed why he is one of the best shortstops in all of baseball.

If the Mets want to achieve anything significant in 2024, they will most certainly need Lindor to be a leader, both on and off the field. Based off what we have seen during a very difficult 2023 campaign, he can be counted on.
