As the New York Mets begin a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers and a West Coast road trip, they are already missing Brett Baty with a hamstring injury. As one of their young players was hurt, another one suffered an injury Friday.

During the top of the second inning of Friday night’s game against the Dodgers, catcher Francisco Alvarez departed the evening with a thumb injury after jamming it while running the bases. Veteran backup catcher Omar Narváez took over.

In the top of the second inning, Alvarez hit a dribbler by home plate. Dodgers catcher Will Smith threw the ball over the head of first baseman Freddie Freeman. As Alvarez made the turn to advance to second base, he stumbled and seemed to have jammed his thumb in the process. Alvarez stayed in the game for the moment to run the bases. He scored on an RBI single by Harrison Bader to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. The Mets removed hm from the game in the bottom of the second inning.

It’s been a rough last few days for Álvarez and his fingers. While stealing a base on Thursday afternoon, he jammed his fingers on second base while sliding headfirst. Losing their star catcher for any point in time would be a big loss for this Mets offense. If he does miss time, expect Tomás Nido to be called up to be the backup to Narváez.
