The Mets announced on Thursday that top prospect Francisco Álvarez has a loose body in his right ankle. He’s in New York right now and will receive an injection at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

The team says that Álvarez can resume baseball activities in 3-4 days. His potential return to play in 2022 will be determined by how he responds to the injection and workouts.

Álvarez, 20, hasn’t played since August 23 for Triple-A Syracuse because of the ankle injury. The top prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline is hitting .247/.359/.500 this season between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. The catcher has a career-high 20 doubles, has tied his career-high in home runs with 24, and his 68 RBIs are two shy of the career-high he set last season.

The youngster has struggled since his promotion to Triple-A, with just a .180/.340/.378 slash line for Syracuse in 32 games.

Álvarez has been a hot topic amongst the Mets fans and front office this year for a potential call-up as big league catchers James McCann and Tomas Nido have been one of the worst offensive duos in baseball.
