The Mets are more valuable than you may realize.

According to a new ranking from Forbes that looks at the team-value of all Major League clubs, the New York Mets are sixth at $2.4 billion, a 4% change from the prior year.

Which MLB team is worth the most?

The Yankees of course, just like they have been since 1998. The Mets’ cross-town rivals can be found at the top of the list, valued at $5 billion, a 9% change from the prior year. The teams in between the two New York clubs are the Dodgers ($3.4 billion), the Red Sox ($3.3 billion), the Cubs ($3.2 billion), and the Giants ($3.1 billion).

The Mets may have not cracked the top five, but being ranked sixth overall should be tempting to any potential owners, I’ll just throw that out there in case you’re reading this Mark Cuban (or Robert Kraft or Steven Cohen, it’s not too late).

The MLB team worth the least? The Marlins (sorry, Derek Jeter). They are the only team to be valued under $1 billion, coming in at $980 million. This is of course only a few years after Jeter’s ownership group bought the Marlins for $1.2 billion themselves. Not far behind (or, in this case, ahead) were the Royals  ($1.025 billion), the Rays ($1.050 billion), the Reds ($1.075 billion), and the A’s ($1.1 billion).

This past year did show the smallest annual appreciation in team value since 2010, when it was just 2% growth. This past year was only 4% to $1.85 billion. It won’t be a shock if this number remains the same or goes down in next year’s numbers due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the stall on baseball. But, let’s not forget that as the great recession was ending, that’s when the Ricketts family bought the Cubs from the Tribune.
