Steve Cohen was at Nationals Park on Sunday for the Mets’ series finale against the Nationals.
He spoke with Marcus Stroman and Joey Lucchesi briefly before speaking with members of the media outside of the dugout.

He spoke about a variety of topics, including the MLB trade deadline, the $210 million luxury tax threshold, what he’s learned as an owner, how Luis Rojas is doing as a manager, and if extension talks are expected to begin soon with Jacob deGrom and his team. We detail Cohen’s quotes below and discuss what he talked to members of the media about on Sunday.

Biggest Thing Cohen has Learned as Owner:

Cohen expressed how much he cares about this organization.

“I knew I would care about every game, but I didn’t realize how much I would care,” he said.

He expressed how emotional each and every inning is for him, saying he lives and dies on each inning. He said at first that level of emotion bothered him, but he’s gotten over it and has come to terms with being ok with how much he cares.

Manager Luis Rojas

Members of the media asked Cohen how he thinks Luis Rojas is doing as manager of the Mets.

“Luis is doing a fine job,” he said, speaking on all the injuries the Mets have had and Rojas’ ability to still create a lineup every day.

“You’ve got to give him credit,” Cohen said in supporting Rojas.

MLB Trade Deadline:

Cohen said that at this time it is too early to tell what will happen at the trade deadline. He said the team will be checking around to see what’s available, but that it’s too early to tell what can happen and “it’s a big decision” to be financially flexible and that the opportunity has to be right for the team to wiggle with the finances.

Luxury Tax Threshold

When asked about the luxury tax threshold, Cohen said it’s something to think about, but that there is a price to pay for going over it multiple times.

Can Fans Expect Extension Talks with Jacob deGrom to Begin Soon?

Cohen said that this time it’s not the right moment, expressing that the team is focused on this season and this year.

“Listen we love Jacob,” said Cohen.

He said there were casual conversations with deGrom’s side during the offseason, but that it was just casual.

He said it’s obviously something the Mets are thinking about (extending deGrom), but at this time it isn’t the right time to bring up the conversations.
