The Mets (34-21) edged the White Sox (17-38) by a score of 6-4 on Tuesday night at Citi Field, powered by big home runs from Pete Alonso and Jared Young. Tylor Megill (4-4, 3.52 ERA) earned the win, while Reed Garrett picked up his second save of the season. With the victory, the Mets notched their second straight series win and extended their winning streak to four games.

(Box Score)

Megill got the start for New York and delivered 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts. After giving up a two-run homer to Miguel Vargas in the top of the first, Megill settled in and kept Chicago off the board for the rest of his outing.

The Mets responded quickly in the bottom of the first. Brandon Nimmo led off with a single, and Pete Alonso followed with a game-tying two-run blast to center. He’s now five homers shy of tying David Wright for second all-time in a Mets uniform. Brett Baty then singled, and Jared Young launched a two-run homer of his own, which was his first hit as a Met, to put New York up 4-2.

The Mets strung together seven consecutive hits in the inning, marking the first time in franchise history that all seven hits in an inning came back-to-back. (Currently, Juan Soto isn’t credited with a hit in the inning after Brandon Nimmo misread a catch and caused Soto to run past him on the bases.)

New York added to its lead in the third. Baty singled again, Young doubled him to third, and Jeff McNeil brought him home with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Megill ran into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases on a single and back-to-back walks. José Butto came in and got the final out to escape the jam. Butto returned for the seventh but allowed a pair of singles and a passed ball that brought in a run. A two-out double cut the lead to 5-4, and Butto was replaced by José Castillo, who ended the inning.

Castillo hit the first batter he faced in the eighth but rebounded with a strikeout to end the frame. After allowing a single and recording a flyout to start the ninth, he gave way to Reed Garrett, who closed out the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. He tossed a scoreless ninth, and his ERA now sits at 0.76 on the season.

The Mets added another run in the eighth, in a two-out rally after a Jeff McNeil single, a Francisco Alvarez single, and a Francisco Lindor single that drove a run in to make it 6-4. It is also worth noting that Tuesday marked Lindor’s 162nd career game hitting from the leadoff spot since he moved to the position last season.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Jared Young earns Tuesday’s honor, with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate including a two-run home run for his first hit as a Met.
