Adam Rubin of the Daily News reports that Nelson Figueroa who was designated for assignment by the Mets immediately after his last start, has cleared waivers and will refuse an assignment to AAA Buffalo.

A source told the Daily News that Figueroa has decided to become a free agent instead which means he can now sign with any team of his choosing.

Figueroa was reportedly shocked and pretty broken up after the Mets released according to his wife who revealed her dismay as well in her personal blog.

Figgy pitched solidly in his one and only start for the Mets, holding the Milwaukee Brewers to just 3 runs in six innings pitched. It was one of the longest starts of the young season for a Mets starter not named Johan Santana.

He was released along with Darren O’Day too make room for reliever Casey Fossum.

Figueroa was a very versatile pitcher who could be used in a variety of roles, and he should catch on with a new team before too long.
