John Farrell interviewed on Friday for the Washington Nationals managerial job according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Farrell, 55, led the Boston Red Sox to their ninth American League East title with a 93-69 (.574) record, good for fifth in the majors. The Red Sox were eliminated from the playoffs for the second straight season in the Division series though.
In his five years with the team, he accumulated a 432-378 (.533) record and won the division with Boston three times (2013, 2016, 2017).
The Nationals are an unlikely landing spot for former Yankees skipper Joe Girardi according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports. Heyman cites the Nationals owners not wanting to pay their managers a premium price and Girardi is coming off making $4 million in 2017.
Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez and Mets hitting coach Kevin Long are also expected to be interviewed for the Nationals job. Multiple reports have Martinez as the current favorite to land the gig.
Last week, the Nationals decided not to bring back manager Dusty Baker despite him leading them to consecutive National League East titles.
