The New York Mets (53-47) were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals (54-47) by a score of 5-4 Wednesday night at Citi Field.

Pitching:

Logan Verrett started for the Mets and was good. Not bad, not great… Good. He pitched 7 innings, allowing 3 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7. His ERA now sits at 4.12 for the season.

Addison Reed pitched the 8th and was brilliant once again, pitching a perfect inning while striking out one. He lowered his ERA to a fantastic 1.88 on the year.

Jeurys Familia came in for the save with the Mets winning 4-3 in the 9th. After a one out 4-pitch walk to Jed Gyorko, Yadier Molina drove a sinker that didn’t sink to deep left-center field for an RBI double, tying the game and ending Familia’s saves streak at 52.

With Molina on second, there was a comebacker to the mound. Molina attempted to advance to third, but Familia said no. His throw to third was low, and thanks to a potential game-saving pick by Wilmer Flores, Molina was out at third. However, after a long at bat, Kolten Wong laced a double down the left field line, scoring the runner from first and giving the Cardinals a 5-4 lead.

Offense:

The Mets got going early, with Neil Walker driving in James Loney with a base hit in the 2nd inning. Walker broke out of his slump tonight, going 3-3 with a walk and an RBI.

The Cardinals held a 3-1 lead until the 7th inning, when with runners on first and third, Alejandro De Aza stole second base and a wild pitch by Adam Wainwright allowed d’Arnaud to score, trimming the deficit to 3-2.

Briefly after, Yoenis Cespedes demolished a ball off the facing of the second deck in deep left-center field to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.

Seung-hwan Oh came in to save it for the Cardinals and did just that. A flyout by Alejandro De Aza, a strikeout by Juan Lagares, and a flyout by Asdrubal Cabrera brought this game to an end.

On Deck:

Thursday at 1:10, the Mets will send Jacob deGrom (6-5, 2.73 ERA) to the hill to face off against the Rockies’ Tyler Anderson (3-3, 3.56 ERA) at Citi Field.
