Former ACES employee Juan Carlos Nunez went to jail for his role in the Melky Cabrera fake website and PED case in 2012. Now, he has filed a bombshell lawsuit against Seth and Sam Levinson of ACES, alleging that not only were they aware of PED use, but directed players on how to obtain PEDs.
Mets pitcher Jeurys Familia is a client of ACES and says he never received PEDs from Juan Carlos Nunez or anyone else.
“I just know of him because I have been with that company for almost 10 years now,” Familia said, “But no, I don’t get anything from him. I don’t know anyone who did. I don’t know anything about it. I can’t say anything.”
The Brooklyn-based ACES also represents several Mets players including David Wright, Kevin Plawecki and Juan Lagares. Plawecki said he had never met Nunez and Wright was not available for comment on the matter.
According to Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News, “the lawsuit filed in New York State Supreme Court alleges that after Nunez signed a contract to work for ACES beginning in 2006, and he was told that he had to do ‘whatever it took’ to recruit and retain players as ACES clients.”
The year that Cabrera was caught doping and had a 50-game suspension slapped down upon him, Nunez was banned from baseball after dealing with all 30 of its clubs.
Nunez was one of the key figures in Biogenesis founder Anthony Bosch’s PED scandal and was one of several defendants in the federal case. He winded up pleading guilty to conspiracy and in 2015, was sentenced to three months in jail.
