Eric Campbell recently told reporter Paul Ivice that he wants to add catching to his skill set. “I realized years ago that was going to be my ticket as a utility guy, and if another position needs to be added, I’m all for it.” (Newsday Feb 13)

Campbell, 28, slashed .263/.322/.358 in 190 at bats last season. He also hit 3 home runs and drove in 16 runs, while stealing 3 bases. He appeared in 85 games playing every position except catcher, center field, and pitcher. On July 31 he had a .328 average, but slumped for the rest of the season, hitting an unimpressive .162.

“Soup” is one of the players on the roster bubble going into spring training. He will be fighting for a spot on the opening day roster. His versatility is already valuable as a bench player, and adding catcher to his repertoire would only increase that value.

Catching depth is not a concern for the Mets, who still have players like Kevin Plawecki waiting in the wings. However, Campbell being able to catch in the case of injury to Travis d’Arnaud or Anthony Recker would be a plus, as the Mets wouldn’t have to make any roster moves if the injury doesn’t merit a disabled list stint.

Six days until pitchers and catchers officially report! LET’S GO METS!
