We’ve seen Edwin Díaz participate in long toss at Citi Field, but ahead of the All-Star Game, Edwin’s brother—Alexis Díaz—gave another encouraging update.

The younger Diaz said Edwin was throwing from 125 to 150 feet “every day” and that he’s been recovering from his knee injury “pretty fast.”

Per David Lennon, Alexis said Edwin is “a true athlete and really can recover quickly, so I hope to see him out there really soon.

When New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz injured his knee in the World Baseball Classic, there were doubts about whether he would pitch in the 2023 season. When Mets’ GM Billy Eppler announced that Díaz was undergoing knee surgery in March, he noted that the typical timeframe for recovery was eight months but that there have been examples of players coming back in only six months.

Díaz told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that he’s still hoping to return this year. “If everything keeps going how it’s going, we’ve got a chance to pitch,” Díaz said. “The trainers and doctors will decide, but I feel great. Let’s see what’s coming for us.”

The six-month timeframe would bring back the Mets star closer in mid-September, with New York having a couple of weeks left in their season. That type of return would potentially help the Mets in a final push for the playoffs and then the postseason if they were to make it. Rosenthal reports that Díaz attempted to accelerate his healing through 25 sessions in a glass-enclosed hyperbaric chamber during the first six weeks of his recovery.

“My scar is looking good. My knee is doing well, responding really well to all the exercise. We’re happy,” Díaz said.
