Edwin Diaz has been named as the National League Reliever of the Month for June, as announced by MLB today.

Last month was arguably Diaz at his best as he dominated on the mound in the ninth inning, giving Mets manager Buck Showalter a consistent and trusted insurance policy.

Diaz boasted a sparkling 0.93 ERA in June with a godly 21 strikeouts and just one walk in 9 2/3 innings. Furthermore, the righty converted all five of his save opportunities while recording an outstanding 0.93 WHIP.

He also ranked in the 100th percentile in both whiff rate and strikeout rate, while his lethal fastball clocked as high as 101.6 MPH in a game against the Angels, where he also struck out five batters as the Mets picked up a big win.

This is the sixth time in his career that Diaz has won Reliever of the Month honors but his first as a Met, with the last time coming in 2018 while with the Mariners. Diaz’s sixth career win is the most by any reliever in the award’s history.

Diaz’s recognition in June is richly-deserved given that the reliever has been dealing all year long, delivering like the high-leverage closer the Mets always hoped they were getting when they acquired the 28-year-old in a blockbuster trade from Seattle. Diaz has a stellar 2.01 ERA through 32 games with 17 saves, 61 strikeouts and a 1.117 WHIP.
