Well it’s no surprise that all the baseball world is a buzz with opinions and reaction to the Gary Sheffield signing.

Lets try and clear through some of the smoke…

First and foremost, while a guest of Mike Francesa on WFAN, Omar Minaya refuted the rumors that Sheffield was guaranteed significant playing time. Francesa had reported that a few times during the hours leading up to the Minaya interview.

Omar made it clear that it was a low risk, high reward move that was too good to pass up. He also said that before making the offer, he spoke with Jerry Manuel and several of the Mets players who were all for bringing Sheff on board.

Next, Eddie Coleman who followed Minaya on WFAN made an excellent point, when he suggested that this could have been a defensive move for the Mets. He believes that because the Phillies were on the verge of getting something done, the Mets got involved to see if they could keep Sheffield away from the Phillies who are desperate for a right handed bat. Great job by Eddie C. who is one of the sharpest guys on WFAN in my opinion, where the Mets are concerned.
