Drew Smith was ejected Tuesday night for a foreign substance on his hand Tuesday night versus the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 2023 Subway Series.

Smith entered the game in the top of the seventh, and before he threw a pitch, crew chief Bill Miller check his hand for sticky substances. The three other umpires also looked at Smith’s hand, and Miller ultimately tossed Smith from the game before he could take the mound.

Smith pleaded with umpires that he took sweat from behind his ear, but the pleas didn’t work. He’s the second pitcher on the Mets this season who was ejected for foreign substances, joining Max Scherzer. Only one other pitcher across all of baseball has suffered the same fate: the Yankees’ Domingo German.

Smith will be suspended for 10 games, and the Mets will have to play a man down in his absence. John Curtiss entered for Smith and threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

After the game, Smith said an MLB official felt his hand and said there was “nothing there.” Nevertheless, Smith will be suspended.
