Cora gives the Mets a solid backup shortstop and second baseman whoc could even step in and start should Luis Castillo falter.

Omar Minaya was all smiles as he made the announcement and said,

“You win championships with a 25-man roster. Alex Cora has been an integral part of teams that have been to the postseason in four of the last five years.”

Cora released a statement that said,

“I’m excited to join the Mets. We have a talented roster. I’m committed to do everything I can in any role to win.”

Alex Cora could earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses: $250,000 for each of 110, 120, 130 and 140 games started.

Cora batted .270 last season in 152 at-bats with the Red Sox.
